The Linfoot Family

As longtime residents of Geneseo, members of the Linfoot family are very proud to have been able to establish this scholarship to recognize the outstanding contributions and impacts SUNY Geneseo and its students make.
This scholarship was initially established to honor Ruth Greene Linfoot by her children. Mrs. Linfoot lived in Geneseo from 1922 until her death in 2008, and for many years was a teacher at Geneseo Central School. She was Geneseo’s womens basketball coach in the 1920’s and is a member of the Legends in the SUNY Geneseo Sports Hall of Fame. She was a charter member of the SUNY Geneseo Foundation Board of Directors and served on that board for many years.
When inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame in 2000, she recounted many stories, but one of the most telling was about a trip her basketball team went on in the ‘20’s. The team was not going to be allowed to stay in the hotel in the town they were in because a member of the team was not white. She said, “that does not work for us, this is our team, and either we stay here or we go home now and don’t play this game.” The hotel accepted the team.
Other members of the Linfoot family have been involved in many aspects of the college such as, The College Council, The Geneseo Foundation Board, The Blue Knights Roundtable, The RAA, selection to The SUNY Geneseo Sports Hall of Fame, AVP of Alumni Relations Emerita, and Director of Special Development Emeritus.
It is our hope that we can help make the Geneseo experience possible and meaningful for students now, and in the future, and that recipients of this scholarship will remember those coming after them with generosity.
